LLM

Bar Examination And Law Practice

Our one-year LLM program is not designed for students who wish to be licensed and practice law in North Carolina or other U.S. states. Instead, we have designed the program for international lawyers who wish to obtain an LLM in American Law and return to their home countries to continue their legal career. The program is not meant to prepare students to take a U.S. state bar examination and become admitted to law practice in the United States. Students interested in moving their residence to North Carolina and in becoming a North Carolina lawyer should apply for a program leading to the JD degree.

Nonetheless, you should be aware that our LLM graduates are permitted to take the New York Bar examination, which requires only that the school verify satisfactory completion of the LLM degree and does not require a separate certification. For information on New York State's bar requirements, you may write or call:

Board of Law Examiners, New York State
7 Executive Central Drive
Albany, NY 12203-5148
Telephone: (800) 342-3335

For further information on the licensing of foreign attorneys in the United States, you may want to see the American Bar Association web site. Foreign lawyers who intend to reside permanently and to practice law in the United States should apply for the three-year JD degree program, the first degree in law, rather than the LLM program.
